Happy 100th Day of School!
Happy New Year!!
2018 is so bright, we have to wear shades!! :)
January S.T.E.M. Club
This is an optional after school club that allows students to work together to build, create, problem solve, and collaborate with peers. During this meeting, students were given a note card and a pair of scissors and challenged to cut the notecard so it could fit over their entire body. It was fun to watch them problem solve to figure out how to complete this challenge!
Merry Christmas from Mrs. Toombs' 2nd Grade Class!
Santa came to John Glenn to visit the last day before Christmas break. Each student got to tell him what they wanted for Christmas!
December S.T.E.M. Club
This is an optional after school club that allows students to work together to build, create, problem solve, and collaborate with peers. At this meetings, students were challenged to build the tallest Christmas tree using toothpicks and gum drops.
Veteran's Day Assembly
What an awesome tribute to our veterans. Students partnered up with Miss Misemer's 4th grade class to create a Veteran's Day craft. Then we attended an assembly honoring our John Glenn veterans. Congratulations to Skyler Langley for winning the Veteran's Day coloring contest!
50th Day of School
Such a fun celebration!
Class Halloween Party
What a BLAST! Thank you to everyone who helped make this party possible! :)
These fun witch fingers were donated to our classroom. Students have enjoyed using them during Reading groups to help them track while they read.
October S.T.E.M. Club
This is an optional after school club that allows students to work together to build, create, problem solve, and collaborate with peers. At our first meeting, students worked together in groups to create a "pumpkin catapult". They had to make a plan with their group, solve math problems in order to earn the materials needed, and finally work together to construct and test their device to see if it worked. It was fun to see how far the pumpkins would go!
Our first LEAD Day this year was Friday, September 29th. Students worked together with a 4th grade class to paint a rock for our school's new Rock Garden.
Students tested aluminum foil, cloth socks, and Styrofoam cups to find out which material would work as the best insulator and protect their hands from the hot water bottle.
We had fun creating hats that would protect us from the sun! Students needed to use materials that were opaque and absorbent.
In this lesson, we were learning about where sand comes from. Students tore paper to mimic the way rocks bump together when they are carried by a river. Eventually, this creates sand at the river's end: the beach.
In this lesson, we were trying to figure out what makes a river flow. Students created a model which included both mountains and valleys. After spraying water on the models, students were able to determine that water flows from high places to low places.
The objective of the following lesson was for students to design a "device" to protect their garden from hungry rabbits. Students worked together to create a fence/building to keep the bunnies out! At the end we tested each group's project to see if it was effective!
Check out our pattern block turkeys!
To review for our test over Place Value, students got to play some fun Place Value Games including a spider toss and a Headbands review game!
We have been working on Place Value and looking at numbers as Hundreds, Tens, and Ones. In this lesson students got to practice building numbers with edible base ten blocks! The saltine crackers represented 100s, the pretzel sticks represented 10s, and the marshmallows represented 1s. What a "tasty" lesson! :)
Students have been learning about the 7 continents and where they are located. In this lesson, they got to create the continents out of play dough.
On September 11th, we celebrated "Patriot Day" by having a discussion about what it means to be a Hero. Students wore red white and blue while they created a flag craft honoring the heroes who risked their lives on September 11th, 2001. Never forget.
The 2nd Day of 2nd Grade!
We celebrated the second day of 2nd grade with lots of fun activities including a "photo booth" pictured below. Students worked with the number 2 all day long! We are looking forward to a fun year in 2nd grade!!
